Congratulations to all of you! I am so excited about how the Lord is using you! And very grateful that the bad news was just a one-month break. Rest is a good and necessary thing - enjoy it! Love you, pretty ladies!

To answer your questions directly, I wouldn't say anything to my neighbor unless she asked me what I thought. However, I would have a very serious and detailed conversation with any daughter of mine who was reading this, and it would involve a close reading analysis in the truest English literature tradition.

I honestly believe that Christian married couples should be having the best sex on the planet, and having it frequently. It is a sacred act that unites them spiritually and emotionally, releases tensions, balances hormones, and expresses true love at the deepest possible level. But this can only happen when they approach sex unselfishly, motivated out of love and a passion that is pure, not out of selfish lust or desire for domination. Whichever party is dominating in BDSM, the whole object of the activity is about power, not about love. The enemy has been propagating lies for centuries that this kind of thing is somehow an expression of love or empowerment and that either extreme makes it okay for women. It's not okay for ANYONE, and I personally believe Christian leaders should stand against twisting the beautiful passion of married sex in this way. How they take a stand will depend on their specific ministry, but no pastor or minister should let this stuff slide.

Thank you. Thank you for writing this post. I had been a little curious about this book, because of it's recent popularity. Thank you for making me want to run far away from ever reading this book. So sad that people would want to read it.

I have been waiting for someone in the Christian Blogsphere to speak out about this book! This new book craze really disturbs and saddens me... I know many women, most of them active Christians, who are loving reading the 50 Shades series. Most of them say its "not for the sexual content" but for the "incredible character development" of the story. Why then do the they admit to not purchasing the actual book, but instead are purchasing it on their E-readers, and hoping no one can see what they are reading? To me, women reading this book for the "character development" is like men saying they are reading Playboy for the articles. 50 Shades appeals to a women's sexuality through words, taking the reader into the character's emotions, like visual forms of porn appeal to a man's sexuality, tapping into their physical lust. Just about every review I have read from women who have read this book, say they have had to wake their husband up at least once during the night after/while reading as they were so sexually aroused. I have a feeling these same women would be highly offended if their husbands woke them up for similar favors after being sexually stimulated from other females/sources, whether explicit movies, pictures, websites, etc....
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
For me, anything outside the relationship of me and my husband that sexually stimulates either of us is very dangerous ground, and a slippery slope, and therefore should be avoided.
What are people going to do when finished with the Shades Trilogy? Probably go back and reread the series, but how many times can that be satisfying? It can quickly become a slippery slope deeper into deviant forms of sexual arousal. Like marijuana is considered a "gateway" drug, I fear 50 Shades could become a "gateway" door leading women into unhealthy sexual appetites and avenues.

Belated as this response is, I think it's important to point out that June Cleaver (a character portrayed as smart and capable by the way) was not the only woman that existed on TV in the 1950s. Throughout that decade, from Eve Arden to Lucy to Ann Sothern to many (unfortunately) lesser known names, all sorts of female characters populated the TV universe. Many were single (long before Mary Richards) and many were successful career women (long before Murphy Brown). Then the 1960s brought us "Honey West," "The Avengers," and Barbara Stanwyck in "The Big Valley" to name just a few. TV and its history is far wider than just one or two series.

Thank you for your beautiful articles! I log onto your site regulary because issues concerning women aren't talked a lot about at church. I had an experience like this recently and before it got far, I immediately placed a boundary for myself by confronting him with this issue, no one-on-one times, no online messaging and no talking about deep issues. It was definitely a wise decision.
